collaborative textile exploration, 2014

After getting to know and sharing artistic workspaces with the master reed weaver Samuel Florencio Goicochea, I proposed collaborating with him to recreate the protective gear he used during his years working in mining. Unable to support his family through his weaving practice alone, Samuel worked for two years in the Volcan mining project in Cerro de Pasco. In 2012, he was on the verge of joining the Conga mining project in Cajamarca, the region where he was born.
These reed-woven sculptures are the result not only of learning Samuel’s craft, but also of listening to his accounts of the precarious labor conditions within the mining sector.

Accompanying these pieces are a video and an interpretation of the mythical figure of the siren. The video documents the repulsion effect between water and an oily gold-colored ink. The reimagining of the siren as a figure of power responds to the iconic presence of Máxima Acuña, a defender of the Conga Lagoon against the extractive project where Samuel almost ended up working.

This piece was made in collaboration with a master burlap weaver with hearing impairment who worked in the Inca market on La Marina Avenue, whose contact information I lost and whom I have not been able to find again.
