Following the presidential election of Pedro Castillo —teacher, peasant, and union leader— the resurgence of racist dynamics in the country’s political climate led many public figures to voice their concerns, anxieties, and frustrations about the new unexpirienced leader and the direction in which he expressed take Peru under his leadership.
This work functions as a caricature of the polarized moment, through which I seek to reflect on the older and “contemporary” forms of discrimination that —by some twist of “chance”— persist even within the most progressive sectors of the Limeño context. I turn to the visual language of the Monopoly game to expose the competitive logic that often governs interpersonal relations among those of us who inhabit this city.
The use of translations and sign-language interpretation points to the ongoing difficulty the country faces —as a nation-state project— in creating spaces of encounter and cultural integration.
