“Indigenistas tampoco (Indigenists neither)”

“Indians yes, Incas no, indigenists neither” is a phrase through which I seek to intervene in the 1990s reflection of Peruvian historian Cecilia Méndez, as I examine how Peruvian criollo nationalism has exalted the Inca legacy at the expense of the marginalization and the living urgencies of Indigenous struggles and voices in Peru. Although in her text Méndez briefly identifies the resonances between indigenista and criollo representational aspirations, she does not articulate them in categorical terms—something that Aymara Indigenous thinker, activist, and writer Fausto Reinaga did develop in the 1970s.
