Ruinas was created during a summer residency inside a Peruvian police facility located in Plaza Italia, offered as a temporary workspace for artists through Galería Ambulante, a project directed by sculptor María Abbadon. Working within that institution prompted me to initiate this project.
The piece emerged from a collective drawing exercise in which I asked passersby in Plaza Italia to draw how they remembered, imagined, or had heard about the Barrios Altos massacre—a 1991 extrajudicial killing carried out by the Colina death squad, in which 15 people were murdered only a few blocks away.
I later scanned and digitally assembled these drawings into the outline of a human body.
